Three arrested on charges of duping medical aspirants

Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested three persons on charges of duping a person of nearly Rs 30 lakh with false assurances of admission to MBBS course at ICare Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Haldia.

They were remanded to police custody till June 19 after being produced before Alipore Court on Thursday. Police started a probe after receiving a complaint from one Subhendu Sekhar Mondal, a 26-year-old man from Boalidanga village of Berhampore in Murshidabad in April this year. The complainant told the police that the three accused – Sanchayan Dasgupta alias Sanchayan Sengupta (34) from Picnic Garden area, Nayan Banerjee (41) a resident of Block-D in Kalyani and Debashis Dalai (35) of Pataspur in Purba Medinipur — took money in two installments with assurances that they would help the victim secure an admission to the medical college.

Police came to know during the interrogation that the three accused started a company by the name of 'IQ Educational Service' in 2015 at 12, Park Terrace, PS-Survey Park. They used to take huge amounts of money from medical aspirants with false promises of admission to various medical colleges. Acting of a tip-off, senior police officers raided 'Ullas Bar and Restaurant' on Kalyani Expressway in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday night and arrested the accused. Police said that the accused used to switch off their mobiles and frequently changed their hideouts to avoid arrest.
