NewTown Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), which had started mechanical sweeping of the main thoroughfares in New Town, has extended its service to the internal roads as a part of the initiative to keep the area clean and green.
The machines that do sweeping mechanically are fitted with GPS so that they can be monitored by senior officials of NKDA. As the services have been extended to the internal roads, it will keep them clean also. It has often been found that contractors keep construction materials including sand and stone chips on the open roads and those who fail to keep them in the specified space are fined. Residents staying in the apartments situated on the internal roads had earlier complained that because of sand and stone chips that are piled up on the roads, the areas get polluted and dusty. This problem will be addressed after NKDA began to sweep those roads by using mechanical cleaning machines.
There are no open vats in New Town and three compactors have been deployed in Action Areas I ,II and III as a part of the solid waste management. The garbage is offloaded at Mollar Bheri where Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) also offload garbage. Around 40 metric tonne of solid waste is generated in New Town daily.
Following the instruction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, 20 acre of land has been given to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in New Town where KMC will offload garbage and will generate electricity and produce manure from it.
Regular monitoring by NKDA has helped to keep New Town clean and green. NKDA will upgrade its solid waste management plan with the growth of New Town.
