A middle-aged man was shot dead by unidentified miscreants while returning home from his work place at Moukhali village under Jibantala police station in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday night.
The victim, a local resident, has been identified as Uday Mondal (45). Locals told the police that they heard the victim scream and rushed to the spot to find him lying in a pool of blood. They immediately rushed him to a nearby healthcentre where the doctors pronounced him brought dead. The miscreants had fled the spot before the locals reached the spot.
According to preliminary investigation, the police suspect that Mondal might have protested against some anti-social activities in the area when he saw it happen on his way back home. Police said the miscreants hit the victim with sharp weapons several times and later shot him from point blank range to ensure his death.
The nature of crime also makes the police suspect that a past rivalry might have led to the incident. Police said the incident took place at Moukhali which is located close to the bordering areas of Canning and Jibontala police station. When he was crossing the area, some miscreants stopped him on his way and started beating him up. They slashed him with a sharp weapon after which the victim fell down on the ground. The miscreants then shot him to death.
Police suspect that the area is frequented by criminals who often assemble there. The police are, however, not ruling out the possibility of a past rivalry between the accused and the victim. They are conducting raids at various places to nab the culprits.
