Woman succumbs after falling from flat, family cries foul

Mystery shrouds the death of a housewife who was found lying injured on the ground in front of her in-laws' home in Behala on Friday after falling off the third floor of the building.

Family members of the victim, however, alleged that the woman had been pushed from the rooftop. On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's family, police have arrested the victim's husband and her father-in-law in this connection so far.

The victim, a resident of Burrabazar area, married a chartered accountant from Behala. Family members of the victim told the police that she had been subjected to both mental and physical torture by her husband and in-laws, who were demanding more money as dowry. Last Friday, the victim received severe injuries on various parts of her body when she fell from the flat situated on the third floor of a building in Behala.

The victim's family was informed. They rushed to the spot and admitted the injured woman to a private hospital in South Kolkata. After fighting for her life for a couple of days, the woman succumbed to her injuries. The victim's in-laws and husband fled the scene after the incident took place. Her family members performed her last rites.

Following the incident, the victim's family lodged a complaint at Sarsuna police station alleging that she had been under tremendous pressure from her in-laws to give them more dowry. On the basis of the complaint, police have started a murder case against the accused.

The victim's father, a businessman, organised a commemoration programme at Burrabazar area on Saturday which was attended by the victim's husband and father-in-law. People present at the programme staged a demonstration in front of them. Police later arrested the two accused on the basis of the complaint.

Police have started a probe and they are investigating if the victim was pushed to her death or if she committed suicide due to the tremendous mental agony inflicted upon her by the accused.
