Two dead, 10 injured in separate accidents

Two persons were killed and ten others were injured, three of them critically in two separate road accidents that took place at Uluberia in Howrah between late Friday night and Saturday.
Police said that the first incident took place near Panpur area on National Highway 6 early Saturday morning when a loaded truck lost control and hit a pick up van and an auto-rickshaw. One person identified as one Drono Polley was killed in the accident.
The victim was believed to be daily wage labourer who was travelling in the pickup van along with some others when the accident occurred.
Police said that the loaded truck was at a top speed on its way to Kolkata from Kolaghat. When the truck was crossing Panapur More area at Uluberia, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it hit the pickup van first and later an auto-rickshaw.
Around 10 persons who were travelling in the pickup van were also injured in the accident. All the injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment. Some of them are stated to be in critical condition.
The local people told the police that the truck was running at a top speed as a result of which, the driver could not control the vehicle. After being informed, police reached the spot and started a probe.
The local residents, however, had taken part in the rescue operation before the police reached the spot.
The local residents also staged a demonstration in front of the police protesting against the rash driving of the vehicle.
The incident created traffic jam on the National Highway 6 in the morning. The traffic movement gradually became normal following the intervention of the senior police officers in the district.
In another accident, one Mohammad Qureshi died when another pickup van lost control and hit a busfrom behind. Five other persons who were travelling in the pickup van also received injuries in the incident.
