Woman found hanging from tree at Khejuri

Mystery shrouds the death of a middle-aged, unidentified woman whose body was found hanging from a tree at Khejuri in East Midnapore on Friday morning.

Local people saw the body hanging from the tree and informed the police. Policemen from the local police station rushed to the spot and sent the body with several injury marks for an autopsy.

A police officer said that the reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained but it seems that she had been murdered and then hanged from the tree to distract the police. It was done to mislead the authorities and make them believe that the woman had committed suicide.

Local people on their way to the farms to work in the morning were the first to see the body. They told the police that they had never seen the woman in the village and they failed to trace her identity.

The police contacted all other police stations in the district to find out if any middle-aged woman had been reported missing in the last two days.

Police suspect that the woman was kidnapped and kept somewhere. Finally, she was killed and hanged from the tree. Suspecting that such a crime could not be committed without knowing the place properly, police feel that someone from the locality is involved in the murder of the woman. Police are yet to ascertain whether the woman was raped and are waiting for the preliminary report of the autopsy to ascertain how she was killed.

Police, however, came to know from the local people that they had seen some unknown young men loitering around the village on Thursday evening. The police are trying to find the young men and questioned the shopkeeper from whom they had bought some food on Thursday evening.
