Minister tables Kalyani Univ (Amendment) Bill in Assembly

Partha Chatterjee, state Education minister, on Monday tabled the Kalyani University (Amendment) Bill, 2017 which empowers the university to appoint a pro vice-chancellor.Tabling the Bill, Chatterjee said that in view of the expansion of Kalyani University's academic and administrative work and functions, it was felt that the post of pro vice-chancellor should be created to reduce the workload of the vice-chancellor.
The function of the pro vice-chancellor will be in sync with that prescribed by the statutes of the university.

The pro vice-chancellor shall be a distinguished academician having a minimum of 10 years of experience in the university system of which five years should have been spent as a professor.
Alternatively, 10 years of experience in a research institute of repute or administrative organisation, of which at least five years were spent working in a position equivalent to that of a professor.
He will be appointed by the chancellor in consultation with the minister.

The term of office shall be for four years and he shall be eligible for reappointment for another four years.
However, he may not hold office beyond the age of 65 years.
