South 24 Parganas police arrested a person on charges of carrying illegal firearms on Saturday night at Sonarpur. The investigators learnt that Kurban Farzi, the accused, is an arms dealer and is connected with some other arms dealers in South 24 Parganas.
The investigators also seized two guns, four magazines and ten rounds of bullets from the person.
"Acting on a tip-off, we captured the accused from a hideout at Sonarpur. This man is an arms dealer and was involved in some bank robberies as well. We have been looking for him for a long time," said a police officer. Farzi will be interrogated and the investigators will try to find other people involved in his racket, a source said on Sunday. Police arrested three persons on charges of running an illegal arms factory in Rabindra Nagar in South 24 Parganas a few weeks ago. It was the third such incident in which police found an illegal arms factory in the same area. Police came to know about Farzi after interrogating the persons arrested from Rabindra Nagar.
Sources said that investigators are searching for one Gautam Roy, resident of Dakshin Bidhangarh, under the jurisdiction of Maheshtala police station.
Investigators suspect that Roy is connected with Farzi in the illegal arms trade. Like the previous incidents that took place in Rabindra Nagar, South 24 Parganas, the police found a 'Munger connection' with Kurban Farzi. The investigators found that Roy had hired two gun makers from Bihar's Munger – Mohammad Nazrul and Mohammad Sabir Ali for manufacturing firearms. The investigators suspected that Farzi helped Roy to sell those arms back in Munger and other parts of the state as well.
