Meanwhile, on Saturday, state minister Indranil Sen felicitated the students who performed well in the Madhyamik examination and gifted them with pens, flowers, sweets, a CD on songs sung by him and a book scribed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Bankura's Anwesa Pyne, a student of Vivekananda Sikshaniketan High School, stood first among all the candidates who had appeared for this year's examination.
Mojammel Haque, a student of Bankura Zilla School, stood second on the merit list along with Hooghly's Anirban Khanra, a student of Ramnagar Nootbehari Pal Chowdhury High.

Birbhum's Diptesh Pal, a student of Rampurhat JitendralalVidyabhaban stood third on the merit list.

The names of a total of 68 candidates featured on the list of the top ten rank holders on the merit list, said WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly.

The highest pass percentage of East Midnapore is followed by South 24 Parganas (90.54), West Midnapore (90.18), North 24 Parganas (89.38), Kolkata (88.93), Hooghly (88.10), Howrah (87.80) and Nadia (82.30).

This year, a significant rise in the number of female candidates was recorded by WBBSE. The number of female candidates who appeared for this year's examination stood at 5,87,654. The number of male candidates was 4,73,469. The numbers indicate that the number of female examinees is 10.76 percent higher than that of male examinees.

"This fact also indicates that there is a growing urge among the entire cross section of society not only to send girl children to school but also to continue their education at least up to the secondary level," the WBBSE President said.

"However, as a percentage of successful candidates, girls are still a little behind and I hope they will soon catch up with the boys in the changing society which is increasingly offering a level playing field to both boys and girls," he added.

In this year's examination, female Muslim candidates (1,61,617) have outnumbered their male counterparts (98,571). "A large number of female Muslim candidates appeared for the examination. This indicates a positive trend amongst the female children of the minority community who are now joining mainstream," Ganguly said.

WBBSE also declared the overwhelming success rate of the physically challenged candidates, which stood at 91.23 percent. Two candidates appearing from Alipore Central Correctional Home passed as well.

Meanwhile, one student, Saugata Bakshi, who had appeared for the examination from a hospital bed on ventilation, has not only passed but his result is also commendable. This year, a new syllabus has been introduced by the board. The Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) pattern has also been introduced. Interestingly, Anwesa Pyne got 690 out of 700.
