District students outperform Kolkata counterparts

A scrutiny of the result of Madhyamik examination which was announced on Saturday morning shows that students from the districts are way ahead of their counterparts in Kolkata when it comes to studies.

The percentage of successful candidates in Kolkata was 88.93 percent but four districts scored better.

East Midnapore district recorded the highest pass percentage across the state – 96.06 percent, followed by 90.54 percent in South 24 Parganas, 90.18 percent in West Midnapore and 89.38 percent in North 24 Parganas. The percentage of successful students in Hooghly (88.10), Howrah (87.80) and Nadia (82.30) are not far behind the capital either.


Of the 68 candidates featured on the merit list of the top ten rank holders, only five were from Kolkata. Most of the toppers featured on the merit list hailed from Bankura and Birbhum. East Midnapore also recorded the highest percentage of successful female candidates at 95 percent, whereas Kolkata recorded the second highest percentage of successful girls – 90.14 percent. The percentage of successful girls was high in West Midnapore (90.14), South 24 Parganas (89.21) and North 24 Parganas (89.45). The number of female candidates who appeared for this year's examination was greater than that of their male counterparts.

5,87,654 female candidates appeared for the Madhyamik examination this year, as opposed to 4,73,469 males. The numbers indicate that female examinees outnumber males by 10.76 percent.

The highest number of female examinees appeared from North 24 Parganas (51,913) followed by South 24 Parganas (50,818) and Burdwan (42,942). In North Bengal, 80.64 percent male and 78 percent female candidates were successful in Darjeeling whereas 73.80 percent male and 66.57 percent female candidates were successful in Jalpaiguri. In Malda, 91.01 percent male candidates were successful along with 79.22 percent female candidates.

WBBSE informed that candidates from Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Howrah and Serampore got 'AA' grade in different subjects with greater frequency than candidates from East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura and North Bengal.
