RKM spends around Rs 43 cr for relief in 2016-17

The Ramakrishna Math and Mission had spent Rs 42.79 crore on relief and rehabilitation between April 1 2016 and March 31, 2017.

During this period, extensive flood relief was carried out in Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Bengal and also in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal where flat rice, puffed rice, salt and other dry food were distributed among flood victims. The relief activities had been carried out by the various centres of Ramakrishna Mission. Relief was also carried out during drought in Karnataka, Maharastra and Telangana.

During the cyclone in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, relief work was carried out. Along with relief, RKM carried out rehabilitation work of the affected people. In Vishakhapatnam, the RKM completed a water supply project when 10,000 metre pipeline was laid to supply drinking water to 265 households belonging to 10 villages in Visakhapatnam and Vijayanagaram districts.

In Tamil Nadu, the Chennai Math handed over 22 newly-constructed low cost houses to poor fishermen families of Pattinapakkam area in Chennai. The centres handed over Swami Vivekananda community hall and education centre and 60 low cost houses at Meliruppu Panchayat area in Cuddalore district to the affected families.

The RKM had carried out distress relief in different parts of the country where besides food grains, shirts, trousers, assorted garments, school uniforms, mosquito nets, bed sheets, washing power, shampoos, soaps, pencils and nutritional drink powder were distributed. Over years, RKM has put equal stress on rehabilitation along with relief and after the great Odisha cyclone, the earthquake at Latur in Gujarat and Tsunami, extensive rehabilitation works were carried out in the affected states.
