Nazrul Jayanti celebrated across state

The birth anniversary of rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was celebrated throughout the state with enthusiasm.

Ministers including Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad hakim, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Indranil Sen were present at a function held at Nazrul Tirtha in New Town. Speakers said that spreading the message of Nazrul on communal harmony was the need of the hour. Seminars on the life and works of Kazi Nazrul were held to mark the occasion.

A two-day Nazrul Jayanti was also celebrated at Rabindra Sadan, Mukta Mancha, Sisir Mancha and Phanibhusan Vidyavinod jatra mancha. Born in a poor family in Churulia, Kazi Nazrul had natural flair to compose music and write poetry from his youth. He was a music teacher and was associated with All India Radio (AIR). He had composed many Shyama Sangeets and had also sung them. He took part in World War I and travelled to Mesopotamia and other places too. CM Mamata Banerjee took special interest to propagate Nazrul's message and a university was set up after his name in Asansol. She also inaugurated a cultural complex after the poet's name in New Town.
