Jogesh Chandra Chowdhury Law College in South Kolkata has decided to have a non-political union in the college.
In a booklet issued by the college management on the issue on Thursday, it was clearly stated that no political activity will be allowed inside the college premises. Political posters will only be allowed outside the campus. There will be boards where the posters of political parties will be put up.
The students intending to contest the election must have a good attendance record. The regularity, behaviour and attendance of the contesting students will be considered while confirming their candidacy. No outsiders will be allowed inside the campus for political activities. The Chief Minister, while attending a meeting at St. Xavier's College some months ago, had lauded the authorities of the institution for having a non-political students' union. She had said that it could be a model for other colleges and universities in the state.
Jogesh Chandra Chowdhury Law College is the first college in the city to have come up with such a proposal.
Over the past few years, clashes in colleges over the admission of students had become rampant and quite commonplace. Allegations of college unions accepting money to grant admissions to undeserving candidates who do not have the required cut-off marks were widespread.
To avoid such cases, state Education minister Partha Chatterjee had said in the Assembly on Wednesday that the admission process for undergraduate courseswill be completed online from this year.
