'Admission beyond sanctioned numbers in colleges won't be allowed'

Admission of students more than the sanctioned strength of colleges under different universities will not be allowed, said the state Education minister Partha Chatterjee in the Assembly on Wednesday.
He said admission in colleges will be conducted online and universities will have to provide detailed information on number of seats available in each discipline in the colleges under them on their websites.
He maintained that it has been noticed that excessive students were admitted in some colleges than their capacity. There are inspectors of colleges and despite which, students more than the sanctioned strength of a college are admitted. This will not be allowed on the behest of financial benefits, said Chatterjee on Wednesday.

He said that 47 new colleges have been set up after the change of guard in the state and a new college will be coming up in Narayangarh. At the same time, 17 universities have also come into existence in the state. Steps were also taken to ensure education for all. Initiatives were taken to ensure higher education for all sections of people. Stress was also given on education for girls. "We have taken steps to take education to the doorsteps," he said adding that the process of preparing curriculum is going on so that students can compete in the national level.
It may be mentioned that the decision to set up a degree college at Narayangarh in West Midnapore will help thousands of students from the area. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had held the first public meeting in Narayangarh after winning the Assembly polls in 2016 where Prodyut Ghosh of Trinamool Congress had defeated CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra. Mishra had won from the seat for four consecutive terms since 1991.
