3 killed, six injured in separate accidents

Three persons, including a woman, were killed while six others were injured in three separate road accidents in the state.

One Mita Banerjee, who was returning home along with four other members of her family died after the car they were travelling in rammed into a truck which was stationed on the Durgapur Expressway.

The accident took place at Ratanpur More near Singur early on Tuesday morning. The four persons are undergoing treatment in Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and their condition is stated to be serious.

Police said that a Maruti Swift carrying the passengers hit a truck which was parked on the side of the Durgapur Expressway. Apparently, the victim's husband Partha Banerjee was driving the car at the time of the accident.

The deceased was sitting right next to the driver's seat. The victim's daughter, husband and in-laws received severe injuries in the accident. The frontal portion of the car was badly damaged as the intensity of the accident was very high. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the driver might have fallen asleep on the wheel, as a result of which, he lost control over the vehicle which was moving at a very high speed.

The local residents started the rescue operation before the police arrived. All the injured family members were rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where the woman was declared brought dead. The other injured persons are undergoing treatment with critical injuries. Local residents alleged that trucks often remain parked by the side of the Durgapur Expressway but the police do not take any steps against these vehicles.

In another accident, a civic volunteer who was performing his duty on the Durgapur Expressway near Singur died after being mowed down by a truck. The victim has been identified as Subrata Adak who was declared brought dead at a nearby private nursing home after being rushed there. Another civic volunteer, who was also present on the spot, received injuries in the accident as well.
