Four youth were beaten up in three separate incidents in South 24 Parganas since Saturday night. They were attacked on mere suspicion that they had committed a crime.
A police officer said three separate yet similar incidents took place at Sonarpur, Jaynagar and Bhangar. In Sonarpur, a youth was beaten up on the suspicion that he was driving his bike in an inebriated state. The youth, Satyajit Mondal, was riding a motorbike when he hit two persons standing on the side of the road on Saturday night.
The duo caught the youth and it led to an altercation, following which they started beating him up. The youth was later admitted to a local hospital. The incident led to tension in the area as there is a hooch den in the locality and people believed that the youth was inebriated because he was coming from the direction of the den.
In another similar incident at Jaynagar, a youth was beaten up as people thought that he had attempted to flee after snatching Rs 10,000 in cash from a person who was coming out of Bangiya Gramin Bikash Bank. The local people caught him and started beating him up. They continued to beat him until he fell on the ground. Civic volunteers rescued the youth and took him to the hospital for treatment. Police have initiated a probe in this connection. In Bhangar, two youth were beaten up on the mere suspicion that they had murdered a woman a month ago. Police said that the youth were relatives of the woman's husband and local people believed that they had a role in her murder.
