TMC leader of Bishnupur shot dead, four arrested

A Trinamool Congress leader from Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants when he was returning home on his motorcycle. The incident triggered tension in the area on Saturday morning. The victim, Ismail Pailan was a block president of the Trinamool Congress at Raspunja area under Bishnupur police station. He was returning home from Bakhra area at around 11 pm on Friday night.

When he was crossing Amarjyoti Park on his way home, some miscreants stopped his way. Police came to know in the course of investigation that a quarrel broke out between the miscreants and the victim over some issue. One of the accused took out a gun and shot at him from point blank range. The victim fell on the ground after receiving bullet injury on his abdomen. Attracted by the sound of a gunshot, the local residents rushed to the spot and found the victim in the pool of blood. A local resident who is also a Trinamool Congress activist in the locality rescued the victim and took him to his house. He was put on a bed which soon became wet with blood. With the victim profusely bleeding from his abdomen, the local residents rushed him to a private hospital in the area where he succumbed to his injuries at around 3 am.

Senior Trinamool Congress leaders went to the house of the victim on Saturday morning. The district leaders have said that the victim had been instrumental in strengthening the party's organisation and he was a popular leader in the area. The reason behind the murder of the victim is yet to be ascertained. The victim's family members alleged that Ismail had protested against various anti-social activities in the area and he also raised his voice against the syndicate business.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim's family members, police have started a probe into the murder of the victim. Four persons have so far been arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in the incident. As per the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the miscreants came on motorcycles and shot at him from a close range. Police are also interrogating the accused to ascertain the reason behind the murder.

In another incident, one Kartik Majhi (45) who is believed to be a local Trinamool Congress activist was hacked to death following a land-related quarrel.
