A mob went on a rampage ransacking vehicles following a road accident in which a passer-by was killed after being hit by a speeding truck.
The incident triggered tension at Ghatal in West Midnapore on Wednesday morning after a person whose identity is yet to be ascertained was mowed down by a truck.
An irate mob ransacked a few vehicles to protest against the speeding up of some vehicles that often lead to road accidents in the area. The incident led to a massive traffic jam in the locality. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control and traffic movement gradually became normal after the police dispersed the mob.
Around 45 persons were injured in another four separate incidents that took place across the state. Three persons received injuries when a car rammed into another from behind on Maa flyover in the city on Wednesday morning. The injured were rushed to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital for treatment. It was learnt that a car, on its way to Park Circus from Bypass side, lost control and hit another from behind in which three persons were injured. The incident caused massive traffic jam on Maa flyover. The police, with the assistance of locals, reached the spot and rushed the injured victims to the hospital. The cops removed the cars which were damaged in the accident and seized both the vehicles. The locals alleged that a car was running at a top speed when it lost its control and hit another vehicle.
Another accident took place on Red Road when a biker was injured after being hit by a taxi. The locals rushed the injured biker to SSKM Hospital.
An auto-rickshaw driver was injured when the vehicle he was riding on overturned in Salt Lake.
Around 40 persons including a few B.Ed candidates were injured when the bus they were travelling in lost control and overturned on National Highway 34 at Itahar. These candidates were returning from a tour to Gangtok when the accident took place early on Wednesday morning. The injured were taken to Raiganj District Hospital. The condition of nearly 20 victims is stated to be serious.
