Fire broke out in a tea stall at Park Street's Kohinoor Building on Tuesday morning. Some office staff first noticed the flame inside the stall on the ground floor of the building. Police said, five fire tenders reached that spot along with Kolkata Police and disaster management group. The firefighters took few hours to douse the flame.
"It was a crowded place, so it was not at all easy to douse the flame. But finally we manage to control it in time," said a firefighter.
The office staff and local shopkeepers helped the firefighters to extinguish the flame. "Firefighters and the disaster management group personnel have done an excellent job. It was really a scary situation initially when we witnessed the fire. But all of us were safe in the end," said an employee of a private company.
Fire officials said that as the building was completely evacuated shortly after the fire broke out and the blaze was doused before it reached to other parts of the multi-storeyed building, none were injured in the incident. However, the Fire department and police have started an investigation into the case to know the exact reason behind the fire.
"This area is full of office spaces and commercial establishments. So we have to investigate the reason of this incident," said a senior fire brigade officer.
It may be mentioned that several people died in a devastating fire that broke out in a 150-year-old multi-storeyed building at Park Street a few years back.
