Bring all hostels, depts in one campus: Mamata tells RBU

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked the authorities of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) to consider the proposal of bringing all its departments and students' hostels within one campus.

Around 50 students from RBU were allowed to witness the administrative review meeting headed by the Chief Minister in Howrah on Friday. This is the first time when students were allowed to be present in such a meeting.

At present, the main campus of the varsity is on BT Road and another campus at Jorasanko Thakurbari where Rabindranath Tagore was born. Thakurbari is a heritage site and it will be converted to a museum where belongings of the poet will be exhibited.

Banerjee said: "I would ask the university authorities to bring together all the departments, hostels for students and other facilities instead of keeping it in a scattered manner at different places."

"There are some lands near BT Road that can be given to the varsity if needed for this purpose. Students will no more have to hop from one campus to another once it comes together. It is also essential to ensure safety and security of students. They do not have to travel very far to reach their university from hostels if it is within one premise or situated nearby," she added.

The Chief Minister has also asked the students from the varsity to become IAS, IPS and WBPS officers.

"There is fame and working atmosphere is also good for the officers and now the salary has also become good.

Moreover, at present there is also a training centre to appear for these examinations in Salt Lake," she said.

The students have also requested the Chief Minister to ensure a few more buses from Howrah Station so that they can easily reach the university.

The students have also requested to allow a student's representative in the executive committee meeting of universities.

Govt mulls three different languages in state-run schools

Taking another major step to bring a sea change in the education system in the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed senior state government officials in the administrative review meeting on Friday to frame a policy so that students can be taught in three different languages including English in schools. She said this after getting to know from an official of the education department posted in Howrah that there are "zero enrollments" is some schools in urban areas of the district as there is a tendency among parents to send their children to private English medium schools. Thus, she urged to frame a policy so that a student can learn

English, Bengali and a third language in a state-run school. She said: "If we do this, then students will not go to any other school and parents do not have to spend much for their wards' education. One must learn Bengali as it is the regional language. The third language could be Hindi, Nepal, or the like."
