On crucial KKR match day, rain, thundershowers likely to hit city

The city is likely to witness a spell of rain and thundershowers on Saturday evening just before Kolkata Knight Riders lock horns with Mumbai Indians in a crucial match for a top-two finish.

Meteorologists indicated that the temperature would decrease slightly but the comfort for pre-Monsoon activities would not last long.

"The trough running from Punjab to Bengal across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar continues to persist over the region. Due to this, humid winds from Bay of Bengal have been blowing over Kolkata for the past few days," said a meteorologist.

Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather said: "With lots of moisture hanging in the atmosphere, we can expect formation of convective clouds as the mercury rises. As a result, pre-Monsoon activities such as thunderstorm, thundershowers or rains may occur over Kolkata by Saturday evening."

"On Thursday, clouds had developed over the state capital around afternoon, between 4 pm and 6 pm, several parts of the city recorded thundershowers, along with gusty winds," he added.

The meteorologists indicated that similar weather would also be seen on Saturday as well. With this, pleasant weather conditions are likely to prevail during the evenings over Kolkata just after the rains.

"The pre-Monsoon activities will not have heavy impact over the temperature profile. The daytime maximums will be still settling above normal and will continue to be so.

"On Friday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata settled at 37 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. Similarly, minimum temperatures are also settling above normal on account of high humidity levels," a meteorologist said.

However, explaining what is convective clouds, the meteorologists said: "This type of clouds form and grow by convection. The hot air floats upwards and the air around it which is comparatively cooler settles below."

"I do not want heavy rain during Saturday evening. It is really an important match for KKR and I want my team to win. I heard that Shah Rukh Khan is also supposed to come," said Kajari Chatterjee, a KKR fan and KKR fan's Twitter follower.
