Pregnant woman forced to undergo termination after club members brutally beat her up

A pregnant woman was beaten up at North 24 Parganas' Ashoknagar after she tried to save her husband from local club members who demanded money for puja on Thursday night. Police arrested a person in connection with the case.
The woman was taken to a hospital in a critical condition and the doctors had to terminated her pregnancy to save her life.
This incident was reported at a time when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised her concern over such issues in the Administrative Review Meeting at Howrah on Friday. Chief Minister directed the police to take steps so that businessmen and transporters and vehicle owners are not unnecessarily harassed.
In North 24 Parganas' Ashoknagar, the 25-year-old woman, Sima Bapari, who was trying to save her husband from local club members, was beaten up in front of her house. The accused persons kicked on her baby bump as she started bleeding profusely.
The victim's husband was screaming for help as nobody came to save them from the perpetrators. Later, some neighbours reached the spot and took the victim and her husband to Ashoknagar State General Hospital.
The condition of the victim was so critical that she was shifted to Habra State General Hospital early on Friday. The doctors there had to terminate her pregnancy to save her life.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim and her husband, police arrested one Noni Gopal Sarkar, a club member in connection with the case. Sarkar was interrogated by the investigators and cops got some important information about the culprits.
"The club members forced the victim's husband Barun Bapari to give Rs 501 for Sitala puja. Bapari tried to convince them that it was impossible for him to give such an amount as he is only a van-rickshaw puller. But the club members paid no heed and beat him up," said a police source.
