Rain in districts lowers temp, boosts hope in city

After experiencing a persistent dry and hot weather, some parts of South Bengal witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The regional meteorological centre (RMC) said that rain was accompanied by storm and would continue till Thursday. "Some parts of South Bengal have witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by squalls. This is actually nor'wester. Rainfall has also been recorded in the districts like Nadia, Hooghly and some parts of Midnapore, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas," said a meteorologist at RMC on Tuesday.

"Our latest Radar Observation indicated that thunderstorm accompanied by squalls and hailing with the maximum windspeed reaching between 60 and 70 km per hour has struck some parts of districts," the meteorologist added. The temperature of the city, however, is high for quite some time for constant influx of hot winds from South which made the weather remain uncomfortable.

"Cyclonic circulation was spotted over Assam and adjoining areas. Intermittent rainfalls will continue over Bengal and Sikkim. Few parts of North-East India, Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata may also receive isolated rains along with few pockets of Coastal Odisha," the meteorologist added.

Temperatures in the last 24 hours were above normal and the discomfort in the day time weather made the citizens suffer.

"The weather of early morning and late nights are comparatively pleasant. This means that the weather cools down as quickly it heats up, which is the only good news that I get from a television," said a South Kolkata resident.

Kolkata received around 50 mm of rainfall, which is lower than average for the ongoing time, in the month of May. No rainfall was seen in last couple of days. Till date, Kolkata has not witnessed much rainfall in the month of May and this recent prediction of rainfall will definitely be welcomed by the residents.

"In 2014 and way back in 2009, Kolkata didn't receive any rainfall in May. So citizens should keep up their hopes as more than 20 days are left in the month," said a weatherman.
