Kolkata Police busted a fake currency racket and arrested two persons from Central Kolkata on Monday. Allegedly, the accused have also been known to cheat people while posing as officers of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in areas including Posta, Burrabazar and Hare Street.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid and arrested Javed Ali(30) of Shakti Para in Ambikapur, Chattisgarh and Iqbal Ali(28) of Sanjay Nagar Colony, Raisen near Kotwali in Madhya Pradesh.
The duo was remanded to police custody till May 18 after being produced before the Bankshall Court. Revealing their modus operandi, a senior police officer said that they used to pay fake currency in exchange for CDs and DVDs from different shops in the city.
On Monday, they were arrested from a CD shop in the south-west corner of Brabourne Road-India Exchange Place crossing at Hare Street in Central Kolkata.
Police recovered fake notes of Rs 2000 worth Rs 76,000.
