In a unique gesture, Trinamool Congress MP from Bishnupur in Bankura, Saumitra Khan has set an example by paying fine when he was riding on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet.
Khan forgot to wear a helmet when he left his house in a hurry on Sunday morning. When he was crossing Bhairabhsthan area, he found that the police were conducting checking.
The Trinamool Congress MP of ruling party Khan proactively asked the on-duty police officers to slap fine for flouting the traffic norms. He also asked the police officers to go ahead with their proceedings. Police officers urged the MP to pay the fine to a bank. He never tried to influence the police and he agreed to pay the fine of Rs 100 to the police under section 129 A of the Motor Vehicles Act.
After the incident, Khan asked one of his associates to bring a helmet for him. When the aide brought a helmet, he wore it and left for his destination. The Trinamool Congress MP also said that he will never forget to wear a helmet while riding on his motorcycle.
He also said none is above law and as a responsible citizen of the country, he must abide by law. He also urged the people to always wear helmets to avoid an accident.
The senior police officers of the district said that this would also boost the morale of the police force as they found that a Member of Parliament came forward to pay the fine for traffic violation.
It may be mentioned that the police throughout the state are keeping a strict vigil to ensure that people ride motorcycles wearing helmets as a part of the Safe Drive Save life campaign that was launched by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to spread awareness among people to check road accidents.
The campaign has become successful as most of the people in the districts were seen riding motorcycles wearing helmets.
