Sovan urges party workers to build contacts with people

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who is also the president of Trinamool Congress of South 24 Parganas' unit, on Thursday urged party workers to build intense contact with people and work seriously for the party. He was addressing a workers' meet at Jadavpur on Thursday. He said: "Workers should work seriously which has been stressed over and again by party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

We have come to work for the people and those who have personal agenda have no place in the party," he said. It may be recalled that Manish Gupta, the state Power minister between 2011-16 was defeated by Sujan Chakraborty of CPI(M) in the 2016 Assembly polls. Though Trinamool got 211 out of 294 seats, Banerjee could not take his defeat and it was infighting which was responsible for the defeat of Gupta. Gupta is now a Rajya Sabha member. The seat fell vacant after Mithun Chakraborty resigned.

Trinamool had made a dent in Jadavpur which was a CPI(M) stronghold for decades. Gupta had defeated Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in 2011 by over 30,000 votes. But because of infighting in
Trinamool, CPI(M) regained ground in some pockets in Jadavpur.
