Corporate leaders laud Kolkata Police for its works

In the "perception parameter", Kolkata is rising very fast, and even some high-profile cities in India can take a cue from the city and follow the best practices benchmarked by the Kolkata Police, industry captains and a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

During an interactive session organised here on Wednesday evening by CII Eastern Region, Vineet Goyal, Additional Commissioner of Police (I) of Kolkata and corporate leaders expressed "huge satisfaction" at what they called a "refreshingly big change" seen in Kolkata in the past couple of years in terms of law and order, traffic management, etc.

Many senior CII members shared their personal experiences to underscore the "metamorphosis" and how the city is putting "negative vibes" behind. "Much of the credit goes to Kolkata Police. In our reckoning, Kolkata Police are among the most pro-active, hard-working and efficient law-enforcing agencies in the country," said Umesh Chowdhary, Chairman, CII Eastern Region & Vice-Chairman & Managing Director of Titagarh Wagons Ltd.

Goyal, however, refused to take the "encouraging words" as a source of complacency, saying: "We still have quite a distance to cover and I invite ideas from CII as to how law and order can further be improved, traffic management can be made a lot better to see Kolkata become the most attractive city in terms of living as well as doing business. We are open to ideas, and criticisms too."

According to Goyal, in terms of exposure and experience, industry captains are the richest lot. "You travel extensively around the world. You have seen the best of the best. Please guide us as to how we can make things better for the city and its people," Goyal told an assembly of more than 40 senior CII members representing leading business organisations. "Law-enforcing agencies alone cannot work wonders. We want you to come on board too," Goyal maintained.

CII Eastern Region Chairman, Chowdhary, shared that as part of its vision to see Kolkata become the City of Joy in every respect, CII Eastern Region has set up a Kolkata Task Force.
