Locals block road with dead body to protest rash driving of vehicles

Local residents put up a block on the Domkal-Berhampore Road with the body of a 37-year-old man who was killed in a road accident on Wednesday morning. The incident triggered tension in the locality.
A scuffle broke out between the police and the local residents when the former reached there to lift the block. The agitation continued for more than two hours till a huge contingent of police reached the area and dispersed the mob. The body was sent to a nearby hospital for the post-mortem examination.

Police said that the victim identified as Altab Seikh (37) was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck. Local people rushed to the spot and found the victim dead at the spot. They started protesting against the rash driving of the vehicle. The driver of the truck and its helper had, meanwhile, fled from the spot immediately after the incident leaving the vehicle at the spot. Police have seized the vehicle and are conducting raids to nab the accused driver and helper.

The local people alleged that the accident happened when the truck was trying to overtake a trekker.

They told the police that the truck was running at a top speed when the driver lost control over the vehicle and mowed down the victim. The local residents put up the road block with the dead body protesting against the rash driving of vehicles on the road. They alleged that police do not take any step against the vehicles that flout the traffic norms resulting in road accidents. The block was lifted by the local residents after the senior police officers rushed to the spot and assured that they would take steps to check the rash driving of vehicles.

Police have started a probe in this regard and they are conducting raids to nab the driver of the truck.
