KMC unhappy with RG Kar Hospital over uncleaned garbage, to take action against senior civic official

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has asked the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital authorities to clear old furniture and garbage immediately, as a part of the drive to prevent dengue.

The civic authorities are also set to take action against a senior official of the KMC, for dereliction of duty in this connection.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked all the municipalities and corporations in the state to take up anti-larvae drives seriously.

The KMC conducted an anti-larvae drive at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning, which was led by Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh.

Senior officials of the hospital, including the superintendent and principal of the college, were also present during the drive.

It was found that garbage behind the Cardiology department and behind B C Roy Nursing Hostel had not been cleared for quite some time. Garbage behind the morgue situated inside the hospital campus had not been cleaned either, while it was a similar picture beside the new B C Roy hospital building, where construction is going on.

The civic officials found that the hospital authorities had not removed some old broken furniture and wooden planks.

Infuriated over the indifferent attitude of the hospital authorities, Ghosh said: "The authorities did not remove the old broken furniture, even though notices had been served four months ago."

"If the patients get afflicted with dengue and malaria then who will be held responsible?" he questioned.

The civic authorities have been carrying out anti-larvae drives since February. KMC teams visit state-run hospitals, private nursing homes, educational institutions and housing complexes.

Ghosh said as dengue spreading larvae thrive in clear water, it is absolutely necessary to remove garbage regularly and clear out old and unused furniture.

It may be recalled that Mayor Firhad Hakim, while addressing a meeting attended by senior KMC officials and their counterparts in the state Health department, had said that the anti-dengue drive by the KMC has become a model for all the civic bodies in the state.
