KMC to start biometric attendance from today

Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will start biometric attendance system from Saturday.

The attendance of all employees including the contractual staff will be recorded through biometric system. The system will be introduced in phases.

In the first phase, the biometric system of recording attendance will be introduced in the Solid Waste Management (SWM), Engineering and Health departments. The system will be introduced in all the departments within a month.

The system is going to be introduced in the KMC headquarter on S N Banerjee Road and later all the borough offices will have the same.

The introduction of biometric system to record the attendance of the employees was decided many years ago. But it could not be implemented due to the Left unions.

Now, the practice in KMC is that the employees have to sign their arrival and departure times. Though the departure is at 5.30 pm, it has often been found that employees have left much ahead of the stipulated time.

Mayor Firhad Hakim said though the employees turn up as per schedule in the Conservancy department, the work culture is very poor.

He hoped that the new system will improve the work culture and increase the efficiency of KMC.
