KMC plans to boost infrastructure of Sirity Burning Ghat in Tollygunge

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has planned to boost the infrastructure of Sirity Burning Ghat located on BL Saha Road in Tollygunge.

"We have plans to create infrastructure of two to three more electric furnaces for performing the last rites of the deceased. There will be a resting place for the family members and other modern facilities. This will help to relieve the tremendous pressure on Shahnagar Burning Ghat (Crematorium), popularly known as Keoratala Maha Swasan, which has already received a major facelift," said Tarak Singh, Member, Mayor-in-Council (Drainage).

It may be mentioned that the civic body has already got possession of 8 cottah land for the expansion and is in the process of acquiring 6 more cottah for the

proposed expansion.

"The owner of the land has already quoted a price for the 6 cottah land. The matter will be taken up soon in a meeting of the MMiC scheduled next week," a senior official of KMC said. Currently, the Sirity crematorium has only two electric furnaces.

The KMC maintains as many as seven burning ghats in the city. Apart from Keoratala and Siriti crematoriums, there is Garia Adi Mahasansan Burning Ghat located in South Kolkata. Three of the burning ghats located in North Kolkata are Nimtola Burning Ghat on Strand Bank Road, Sri Sri Ramkrishna Mahasmasan Burning Ghat and Kashi Mitra Burning Ghat. The solitary burning ghat in Central Kolkata — Birjunala Burning Ghat is located on Lenin Road.

Apart from the seven burning ghats, there are three Hindu burial grounds, four Muslim burial grounds and one Christian burial ground at Mullick Bazar in Park Street.
