KMC anti-larvae drive in dengue-hit Behala
Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is conducting a special anti-larvae drive at a ward in Behala where some cases of dengue have been recently reported.
Civic authorities got information that some people at ward 131 under borough 14 have been afflicted with dengue.
Sovan Chatterjee is the councillor of the ward. Though Chatterjee had resigned from the post of mayor in 2018, he is still the councillor of the ward but has not visited the area in the past one year.
KMC's special team visited the area and started cleaning operation.
They visited the houses of the people who have been suffering from the disease.
The KMC has set up Central Rapid Action teams in every borough in addition to the Borough Action
Teams, thus there are 32 rapid action teams now to oversee 144 wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The KMC officials said because of intense anti-larvae drive, which has been launched in February, the number of people afflicted with Dengue has been greatly reduced.
Twenty wards have been declared vulnerable and drives are carried out there on regular basis.
Senior civic officials regretted that despite intense campaign on the dos and don'ts
that need to be followed to combat the outbreak of the
disease, many educated people are not following the instructions.
They are not cleaning the containers used to store water once in a week.
Also, the water in flower vase and the tray of the refrigerator which serve as the potential breeding ground
for mosquitoes are not cleaned. "We need cooperation from people coming from all walks of life to combat the outbreak of Dengue as it is not possible for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation also to stop spreading of the disease," said a senior civic official.
