Kidnapper terror: ADG urges people not to spread rumours

Kolkata: Additional Director General (ADG), Law and Order (L&O) Anuj Sharma on Monday urged people not to spread rumours regarding child lifting gangs which are allegedly operating in several areas of the state.

According to Sharma, some people are trying create an unstable situation by spreading rumours that some child lifters are kidnapping children, on social media platforms.

He said: "it is our request to the people not to spread or circulate any fake and instigative message which can create an unstable law and order situation. This is being done in a planned way. If any such information is received, please get in touch with police. In several such incidents, police have already taken stringent action and will do the same in future."

"Several incidents are being reported from South 24-Parganas. We have made people aware there. Local civic administration has also been asked to keep a close watch on the situation," Sharma added.

Though he pointed his finger towards the districts where the maximum number of such cases are being reported, several such incidents have also happened in Kolkata during the past few days.

On Sunday, at around 9:30 pm, local residents saw a young woman talking to a child at Sree Mohan Lane in Tollygunj. They immediately apprehended the woman, tied her to a lamp post and beat her. Upon receiving the news, police went to the spot and rescued the woman, who had suffered multiple bleeding injuries.

In another incident, a youth was badly beaten up by locals at Chowbaga in Anandapur. It was alleged that two youths were roaming aimlessly in the area, which made the local residents suspicious. When the duo was challenged, one of the youths fled from the scene.

Locals caught the other youth and started beating him up. Upon getting the information, police rushed to the spot and saved the youth. He was later admitted to a local hospital with grievous injuries.
