Jiaganj prime accused held, no political motive behind murder

Kolkata: Just a week after the Jiaganj triple murder took place, the police on Tuesday arrested the prime accused who also confessed to committing the crime during investigation.

The officers claimed that the murder was a result of a financial dispute and virtually ruled out any political angle in the case.

Bandhu Prakash Pal, his wife Beauty and their five-year-old son Angan were found murdered at their home in Lebu Bagan area of Jiaganj on October 8. The statement by the police administration assumes significance with the BJP desperate to give a political angle in the killings. A delegation led by senior BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and S S Ahluwalia met President Ramnath Kovind in Delhi and sought his intervention in the murder case.

Earlier, soon after the murder took place on the Dashami night, the BJP had claimed that the victim was an RSS worker but the family members immediately ruled out any political connection behind the murder. "We stand by the outcome of the investigation. BJP leaders in Bengal have been left red-faced after the police cracked the murder case with such efficiency and ruled out any political connections. So, they have gone to Delhi to hide their faces," Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee said.

The West Bengal Police soon after the arrest tweeted: "Persistent and sincere investigation in the Jiaganj PS murder case of Murshidabad has resulted in a person confessing the crime and his arrest. He had financial transactions and animosity with the deceased person."

Mukesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad, said the arrested person, Utpal Behara (20), has admitted killing the primary school teacher, his wife and son over monetary dispute related to an insurance policy. "He has claimed that the entire operation was committed from 12:06 am to 12:11 am," Kumar said.

The assailant Behera is a construction worker from Sagardighi town where 35-year-old Pal, the murdered teacher, grew up and taught at a primary school. Police sources informed that Behera had got into an 11-year term policy with a yearly premium of Rs 24,167 through Pal.

"He claimed during questioning that while he got the receipt for the first year, Pal did not give him the receipt for the second year even after he paid the premium. He had called up Pal to return his money as he was not handing him the policy paper and was allegedly greeted with abuses. Soon after the telephonic conversation, Behera felt insulted and decided to take revenge by killing Pal," an investigating officer said adding that the victim's wife and son were killed as they knew Behera and could have identified him.

It was around 10.30 pm on Dashami, Behera called up Pal and stated that he wanted to visit his home. Pal had no hesitation and asked him to come as everyone in the family was familiar with him. As he knocked at the door, Pal opened it and immediately he attacked him with a sharp weapon and killed him. He then went into the next room and attacked his pregnant wife and son and killed both of them.

According to the police, apart from working as a teacher, Pal was also involved in chain-marketing companies, insurance companies and other businesses for a long time.
