Jewellery worth lakhs stolen from temple

Kolkata: Miscreants stole ornaments worth several lakh rupees from a temple in the Kidderpore area on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, some 'sebayat' identified the theft and reported the matter to the police.

According to locals, some 'sebayat' of Panchanan temple at Watgunj found a portion of the temple's roof to be partly broken on Sunday. Some wooden sticks with iron hooks at the end were found lying on the roof. After being informed sleuths from Watgunj police station and anti-burglary section visited the incident spot.

Sources informed that police found several footprints on the roof. It is suspected that there were more than one person involved in the theft. During a probe police found some wooden sticks with iron hooks attached to it.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the thieves tried to enter the main temple by breaking a portion of the wall from the roof.

As they failed to create sufficient space to enter the temple, thieves used wooden sticks to steal the ornaments from a ventilation space at the temple. Some of the ornaments were found on the temple floor as they might have fallen from the iron hooks while thieves were trying to steal.

Later, the scientific wing of police along with some forensic experts visited the place. It is suspected that the thieves might have kept a watch on the temple for a few days.

The sleuths have collected footages from the CCTV cameras installed at the temple premises. Footages from other CCTV cameras in the area will be checked as well to get any clue about the crime.
