Infant chokes to death in Behala
Kolkata: A nine-month-old child died after a portion of food that was being fed to him stuck in his windpipe.
The incident occured at Arabinda Pally under Parnasree police station area in Behala on Thursday afternoon.
The mother was feeding the child a banana at around 12.30 pm when it accidentally got stuck in his windpipe and he started suffering from breathlessness ultimately resulting in death.
According to police sources, the child, Ankit Sau, was fed the banana while he was on his mother's lap. Suddenly as it got stuck, the child started groaning. Realising that the a piece had got stuck in his windpipe, he was rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Ankit was the only child of the couple. His father Pradip Sau runs a grocery shop in the area. In another incident, a mentally challenged person was beaten up by the hostel residents of JB Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital on Raja Dinendra Street in Ultadanga.
They alleged that the person had entered the hostel for stealing cell phones belonging to the junior doctors in the wee hours of Thursday.
Sources informed that the person was tied to a bed in one of the hostel rooms and was roughed up.
Luckily, somebody from the hostel informed the Ultadanga police, who rushed to the spot and rescued the person. He has been admitted to RG Kar Medical College Hospital.
The police are examining circumstantial evidences and are likely to initiate a case soon.
The incident brought back memories of 12 junior doctors beating up mentally challenged Korpan Shah at NRS Medical College Hospital on November 16, 2014 suspecting him to be a mobile thief.
