Illegal bike racing claims life of 22-yr-old management student in Charu Market
Kolkata: Racing of bikes by flouting traffic norms claimed the life of a management student, at Charu Market in South Kolkata on Sunday morning. Another youth, who was riding pillion, also received severe injuries.
Police said that the victim, Subhrojit Singha (22), was a resident of Bakulbagan Road and he was riding the bike with one Manojit Nandan sitting on the pillion seat. Manojit is admitted to a hospital with severe injuries. Subhrojit was riding a Bajaj Dominar 400, which costs around Rs 1.8 lakh.
Sources said that the police came to know after speaking to people who witnessed the incident, that there were four bikes and they were racing among themselves early in the morning. The bikes were moving at a speed of around 100 to 120 km per hour. "Unfortunately, none of them were wearing helmets and it turned the accident fatal," said a police officer.
Police said that the bike skidded while taking a sharp turn on Deodar Rahaman Road. The accident took place when they were heading towards Lake Gardens Flyover from Prince Anwar Shah Road.
Both Subhrojit and Manojit fell at a distance when the bike skidded and received severe injuries all over their bodies. The bike hit the road median and a major portion of it was damaged.
Local people and police took them to MR Bangur Hospital, where doctors declared Subhrojit brought dead, while Manojit was admitted to the hospital.
According to a police officer, the accident would not have turned fatal if they had worn helmets.
"We are campaigning to urge people not to ride bikes without helmets. Awareness campaign is also going on in social media to reach the youth. The police always take legal steps for flouting traffic norms, but at the same time, people also have to be aware about its ill effects," the police officer said.
It may be recalled that Shibaji Roy, a businessman from Kolkata, was killed when his Ferrari California T hit the railing of a flyover on National Highway 6 near Pakuria Bridge in Howrah, a few weeks ago. The car was at a speed of above 150 km per hour.
