In a unique initiative, IIT Kharagpur is planning to start MBBS course from 2019.
It was learnt from the sources, that IIT Kharagpur will set up a medical college where around 50 students will be able to study MBBS course in the initial level. There will be a 400-bedder hospital inside the campus of this prestigious institution. This is for the first time that such an initiative has been taken by a premier institution like IIT. The initiative was taken to provide better health services to the local people.
If everything goes as planned, the proposed medical college and hospital will start admitting the patients from the mid 2018. The college authorities will seek the permission of the Medical Council of India (MCI) after the hospital starts functioning. A senior official of IIT Kharagpur said that the first batch of the MBBS will start with 50 students.
IIT Kharagpur authorities will provide the degrees to the candidates. The total procedure relating to the admission of the medical aspirants will soon be chalked out through a detailed discussion. It was also learnt that IIT Kharagpur authorities may take their own entrance examination instead of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a nationwide medical entrance examination which will conduct the medical entrance examination from this year.
It may be mentioned that some of the top medical colleges in the country do not come under the ambit of the NEET and they hold their own entrance examination. It may be mentioned that the final decision regarding the entrance examination is yet to be taken by the college authorities.
