IIT-Kgp placements see significant boost with 75% placements in UG

Kolkata: Placements at IIT Kharagpur have witnessed an improvement of 12 percent for undergraduate students (UG) and 14 percent for postgraduate (PG) students in comparison to last year. The placements for UG has touched the 75 percent mark while those in PG stands at 38 percent.

"The 2017-18 placement season at IIT Kharagpur has reached a remarkable milestone with offers made to 1,200 students of the Institute. This placement season has started with 2,054 students being enrolled for the placement process, which is the maximum at any individual IIT," said a senior official of the institute's placement cell.

The official attributed the placement offers to the wide variety of disciplines offered by IIT Kharagpur. The 1,200 offers come courtesy of the 200 companies that visited the campus during phase-I of the placement process. "This year has seen a new trend, with PSUs starting to visit the campus during the month of November, which is much before the actual placement session," he added.

It may be mentioned that Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) saw huge jump of 20 percent this year, compared to the last year.

"Various measures were taken to promote placements in general and in particular to PG students. Though PhDs graduate throughout the year, this year the Career Development Centre (CDC) has initiated a placement drive for PhDs graduating within 2 months and this has given a fruitful outcome, with 26 PhDs getting placed across reputed Teaching and Research institutions," the official said.

CDC is taking measures to also invite industries to recruit PhDs.

Students gave got placed across all departments – Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences (Economics) and others.

Microsoft, Wipro, Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas Instruments, ITC and Unilever are some of the major companies that have made job offers at IIT Kharagpur campus.
