IIT-KGP introduces new induction programme
Kolkata: IIT Kharagpur is conducting a week-long induction programme for the first year students that includes their participation in a wide-range of social activities, sports challenges and life skills programmes.
The institute aims to inform the new joinees about academic and social issues, have better understanding of the academic environment, awareness regarding various informative services, get them familiar with the campus life etc through this induction programme.
"The students come with a lot of talent, however, after intensive preparation for the entrance and for smooth transition from home environment to that of IIT atmosphere, they need guidance. We will help the students generate interest in their respective areas of study and recognize skills they would require to do well. It is critical that they develop a sense of belonging towards the Institute and friendship with their peers and seniors, thus adapting to the transition," said Prof Somesh Kumar, Dean, Students' Affairs.
The students are starting their day at 6.00 AM with sessions in Yoga and games followed by programs to explore their areas of creative and cultural interests and activities in life skills. Prof Priyadarshi Patnaik, who is heading this initiative, is hopeful that the induction program would help students build interpersonal relations through direct interactions instead of social media communication. "It will also help them with greater insight about themselves and others around them which will in turn help them deal with stress, conflicts, competitions, create a stronger bonding with the student and faculty community," he added.
The students will get the opportunity to interact with the Director, administrative team, faculty members and senior students of IIT Kharagpur to learn about the Institute and community life, their halls of residence and respective departments and opportunities thereof. Motivational sessions by alumni achievers is being organised related to career, success, culture, frontiers of science and technology, self, etc.
