A housewife was tortured by her in-laws at Katwa in East Burdwan as she had given birth to a girl child.
Failing to tolerate the torture that had been continuing for the past seven years, the woman along with her daughter somehow managed to flee from her in-law's house on Friday and took shelter in her father's house.
She lodged a complaint with the police against six persons including her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law. The police went to her in-laws' house but they had fled before the police reached.
The police initiated a search for the accused but are yet to arrest any of them.
The woman alleged that her in-laws had started torturing her since she gave birth to her daughter. They didn't use to give sufficient food to her to eat. Despite facing all troubles, she had continued staying in her in-laws' house considering that her husband would understand someday the value of a girl child.
Instead of the situation turning towards her favour, it turned worse day by day. Her in-laws had allegedly burnt her hands whenever she had asked for food. They used to beat her up and abuse her for giving birth to a girl child. They hardly used to mix with neighbours and they continued torturing her despite protests from the local people.
They didn't use to allow the woman to go out of the house and also never allowed her to talk to any of their neighbours.
The accused had poured acid on her hands when she wanted to go to her father's house. Some local people had gathered outside their house when the woman cried for help after acid was poured on her hands. The accused told the neighbours that she cried for help as she had accidentally fallen inside the toilet.
The woman had managed to escape on Friday early morning with her daughter. She had somehow reached her father's house where she fell ill.
The police initiated a probe based on the allegations levelled by the woman.
