Kolkata: A cancer researcher from Mankundu in Hooghly mysteriously drowned in a lake while taking bath with some of his friends in Mumbai.
The victim's body was fished out from the lake on Sunday morning that is around 18 hours after the incident.
The victim, Soumyajit Saha, was working as a researcher with a private company and staying in Mumbai for the past five years.
In Mumbai, he used to stay at Navi Nagar. It was on Saturday, he went for an outing with four of his friends. They went to a lake which is situated around 200 km away from Kolba.
Though initially none of the four youth had any plan of taking a bath in the water body, the victim and one of the friends decided to take a bath in the lake.
Soumyajit dived into the lake while others were standing on the bank. They initially realised nothing but their suspicion rose when he didn't come out of the water even after a minute. One of his friends jumped into the water to search him. But it was of no help.
Police were informed and the search operation to find him out started immediately. Finally, the body of the victim was found on Sunday morning. The body has been sent for an autopsy. Family members from Hooghly went to Mumbai.
Police have initiated a probe in this connection and are trying to ascertain whether it is an accident or there is any foul play behind the death of the researcher. The victim was scheduled to stay another one year in Mumbai and was supposed to go to the US after completing his research work in Mumbai.
