Home guard beaten up on suspicion of being a thief

Kolkata: A home guard was beaten up when he went to perform his duty at Panskura, East Midnapore, on suspicion of being a thief. The incident took place at around 12.30 am on Monday.
The police said that the home guard, Subrata Majumdar, is a resident of Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas and went to work during the Panskura Municipality election that was held on Sunday.
The police deduced after preliminary probe that Subrata went to a government building where he was supposed to stay after work. The poll started at 7 am and went on till the evening.
Subrata went to sleep after returning at night. He woke up around midnight, changed and went out in casuals in search of food.
He went near Bahar village in search of a shop. Some locals found him loitering in the area. They grew suspicious and asked him what he was doing there.
He told them that he was looking for food but a group of locals did not buy his explanation. He failed to tell the name of the place in Panskura where he went to work. Subsequently, the locals started beating him up.
They continued to beat him till he fell unconscious following which some residents informed the police.
The police went to the spot and saved Subrata after which they took him to a local hospital where he was treated. He was later shifted to a hospital in the city.
