History test row: Post re-evaluation, JU to probe lapses of answer scripts

Kolkata: Jadavpur University will conduct an enquiry to find out whether there were any procedural or other lapses while checking the answer scripts of History admission test.

The decision of the university comes in the wake of the varied marks obtained by the candidates in the admission test. In the first case, the scripts were checked by the professors of the History department and in the second, it was re-examined by external examiners.

"The enquiry will be conducted by someone of eminence and high stature who is not connected with the university," Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, Registrar of JU said.

A meeting was held in the presence of Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor and other senior varsity officials where the decision of the probe was taken. The registrar made it clear that the enquiry will not come in the way of the admission process in the History department that started on Monday, based on a merit list that was brought out after re-evaluation and scrutiny of the scripts by external examiners.

It may be mentioned that re-checking of the answer scripts witnessed a significant change of marks in case of a number of students.

On the revised selection list for admission, as many as 15 changes were found. A total number of 15 candidates, who were on the waiting list after the earlier evaluation, made it to the selection list after re-evaluation. There were cases — where a student, who had scored 6 out of 100, got 32 after re-evaluation. A total of 344 scripts was re-evaluated.

It may be mentioned that JU decided to conduct a review of the scripts on August 8 after there were several complaints regarding the earlier evaluation pattern. There were students who had scored less than 10 in the admission test whereas had scored 90 percent or above in HS or equivalent examinations.

In another major development, a student filed a petition on Monday before the Calcutta High Court seeking its intervention in the alleged discrepancies found with the subject. This student had scored 60 in the first evaluation while it went down to 54 after re-evaluation. In the present circumstances, the student has featured fifth on the waiting list though he was on the merit list at first.
