Hindu Hostel row: Agitating Presidency students to hold signature campaign

Kolkata: The agitating students of Presidency University has decided to strengthen their movement in demand of a quick handover of Hindu Hostel by holding a signature campaign among the students of the varsity.

The agitating students will collect signatures for a week and then seek intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, state Education minister Partha Chatterjee and Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who is also the chancellor of the varsity.

"We will soon hold a convention addressed by eminent educationists in support of our demand. Our move comes in the wake of the university authorities dragging its feet over the issue. The Vice-Chancellor has not turned up at the varsity for a period of nine days," Sayan Chakaraborty, an agitating student said.

The students have been agitating inside the administrative building of the varsity for more than two weeks demanding the handover of

Hindu Hostel.

They believe that a portion of the hostel could easily be handed over to them after some minor repair work.

They were provided with lodging facilities at Tarulia in New Town after Hindu Hostel was shut for renovation in July 2015.

They have now refused to stay there anymore and have come with all their belongings to the university campus itself.
