A Higher Secondary examinee committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room in her house at Behala following an altercation with her mother.
Police said the victim, Ankita Halder (17), was suspected to be suffering from depression and took the extreme step following some quarrel with her mother. The incident happened when her mother had gone out for some work.
After returning home, the victim's mother found the door of her room locked from inside. She knocked on the door repeatedly. But the victim did not reply. She then along with her brother broke open the door and found Ankita hanging from the ceiling.
They brought her down and took her to Vidyasagar State General Hospital with the help of some local people where she was declared brought dead. The victim's father was a physically-challenged person who was in another room.
After speaking to the victim's mother, the police came to know that she had just told Ankita to concentrate in her studies as her examinations are knocking on the door. "Like all other mothers, Ankita's mother too scolded her daughter asking her to study properly," said a police officer adding that they have to find out whether the altercation with her mother was the only reason for her depression or were there some other factors.
Police came to know from local people that she was a good student. Her family members claimed that she was a bit disturbed for the past few days and it seemed that she couldn't concentrate in her studies. Being an introvert, she did not even disclose her problems to anyone.
The police are going through her diaries and exercise books to find whether she had left anything in writing before committing suicide or if she had held someone responsible for her death.
