Heavy downpour looks to drench Siliguri residents

Siliguri: Siliguri awaits heavy to very heavy rainfall, following the prediction of torrential downpour by the met office on Thursday.

The place has already recorded a rainfall of 480.80 mm in just six days of July. In comparison, 482.50 mm had been the recorded in the whole month of July in 2014, with 493.80 mm being recorded in July 2015.

Siliguri had recorded 3,377 mm of rain in 2017. Though most areas recover from waterlogging within half an hour, a few areas, namely some parts of Sevoke Road, South Ambedker colony and few more remain severely flooded due to excessive rainfall.

"Due to the construction of the Asian Highway the road has grown taller, for which it becomes difficult to drain the stalled water after a downpour. But we still try our best to take care of the affected places and try to drain the water as early as possible", said Ashok Bhattacharya, the Mayor of Siliguri.

After investigation, waterlogging at many places has been traced to the clogging of drains due to accumulation of plastic bags and other garbage, but work is continuously being done to help the people adversely affected by the rain.

"The people will be aided by the government and the municipal corporation in every way," said the Mayor.
