Heat, humidity trigger highest ever power demand in Kolkata

Kolkata: Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) met the highest ever demand for electricity in the city on Wednesday.

It is said the demand was triggered by a soaring mercury.

According to CESC, at 3:30 pm, on Wednesday, the demand of power reached up to 2319 Mega Watt (MW), which is reportedly an all-time high demand for electricity in Kolkata. According to a source, as the temperature since the past few days has been hovering around 36 degree Celsius, use of air conditioners in the households has increased which led to an increase in consumption of electricity.

Various shops owners claim sale of air conditioners in the past few months have gone up reasonably.

Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation claimed that on May 10 at 3:45 pm demand of power had reached 2315 MW which was the highest in the summer till Wednesday.

On May 18, the demand for electricity was 2228 MW whereas on the next day demand was dropped to 1732 MW. According to CESC officials, despite the summer has prolonged and the temperature is continuously rising, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation is ready fulfill the soaring demands of electricity even if such situations crop up in future.
