Group of local women ransacks liquor dens in protest

Local women assembled together to make a group against spurious liquor traders of the locality at Goghat's under Kamarpukur panchayat.

At least 50 women and girls picked up wooden rods, bamboo sticks, sickles and other arms to ransack liquor dens of that locality.

Their repeated attacks made most of the spurious liquor traders flee the area as their shops were being vandalised by the newly formed women's group.

The traders, who were still doing business there, were given an ultimatum to leave the spot.

Most of the women had lost their husbands due to spurious liquor. There were also a few whose husbands were drunkards. Those people regularly committed nuisance after returning home. They beat up their wives, daughters and mothers.

"This group of women were victims of such liquor-related incidents. They shed tears before police and administrative officers but nothing happened. Now, they took the responsibility to drive those people out of the area," said a local resident.

"I lost my father who was a drunkard. He was a rickshaw puller by profession and used to earn Rs 300 per day. But he could not contribute to the family and spent money on consuming liquor. He used to beat me and my mother. But we knew that he was a genuinely good person when he was normal. This liquor trade has to end at any cost," said a girl who was member of that group.

"My 14-year-old son consumes liquor regularly. Please tell me who should I blame? He was a good student. He once had stood first in the class. Now he has quit his studies. He is a daily labourer now. He spends all the money that he earns on liquor," a woman said.

The women gang vandalised several liquor dens. Some local criminals threatened those women to stop but they paid no heed to them.

The woman gang generally started their operation early in morning. The police are also with them now.
