A conglomeration of a few bank employees' organisation called up a strike on Tuesday. All the nationalised banks, private banks, co-operative banks and Gramin banks will be closed on Tuesday.
Despite the strike, considering the ongoing Madhyamik examination, the organisations decided to open the ATMs.
"We have already held and organised a series of programmes on the harassment of common people caused by the unplanned demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee notes," said Pradip Biswas, General Secretary of Bank Employees Federation of India.
"Connivance and unholy alliance between the big corporate with the top echelons of banks and the political bosses at the centre of power have successfully generated Non Performing Asset at steadily and growing rate; as such, Non Performing Asset of Public Sector Banks have reached intimidating proportions" Biswas added.
"We have been organising independent campaign movements on the issue for the past several years. The present government at the centre, however, appears to be more lenient on the defaulters and, as such, encouraging more write offs than recovery," Biswas alleged.
"The bank authorities are increasingly involving outsourcing to do work. The salary of the Group-D staffs has not been increased," alleged Rajen Nagar, president, All India Bank Employees association.
"There is also no transparency in supply of cash to Banks. While most of our banks are still suffering from short supply of cash, one cannot understand, how few private banks get uninterrupted cash supply," Biswas added.
